Do JP get paid in Australia?
Are JPs paid? No. Appointment as a JP is entirely honorary. The legislated Guidelines on the role of a JP in the ACT state that a Justice of the Peace must not charge or accept any payment, reward or any form of compensation or gift for acting in the capacity of Justice of the Peace.

Can JP certify a copy of an electronic document?
JPs are only able to certify copies of original documents. As copies of electronic documents are generally either printouts or photocopies themselves, they cannot be certified by a JP as being a copy of the original document.
Many CABs also hold JP clinics at designated times where anyone can receive a JP service without an appointment. The CAB can also help you find a JP elsewhere – there may be a JP clinic / Service Desk at your local library or Community Law Centre. How much does a notary cost in NZ?
How much does it cost? The minimum fee is NZD $150.00 plus GST payable for the first document and NZD $30 plus GST for each additional document payable at the end of your appointment.
JPs are not allowed to accept payment nor any kind of gift. If you ask a JP to photocopy a document for you, they may ask you to pay for the copy.
Can a witness be a family member?
A party relying on a deed may accept a family member as a witness (although will almost certainly insist on an adult) but may wish to add some additional controls so that if the signatory and witness both claim the deed wasn't signed there is some additional evidence to show they are not being truthful.26-Mar-2020

What legal action can be taken against a JP?
A person who suffers loss or damage because a JP did not take reasonable care may have cause to take legal action against the JP. An example of such a case is outlined in Section 4.3. 2 on page 56. The suggested procedures and other guidance in this handbook have been developed to assist you to meet your duty of care.

Is a JP the same as a magistrate?
Magistrates (also called Justices of the Peace) are ordinary people who hear cases in court in their community.
If you wish to help someone prepare a document, it is not advisable for you also to witness or certify that document.
